Facts Before The Thoroughbred Auction

Face the facts. Not every racehorse ìs going to win the Kentucky Derby. You may attend a thoroughbred auction and strike out completely on a racing dud. To compound that error, you may pay out half a million dollars based on pedigree alone. Perhaps ìt is Occam's Razor. You hear hooves and do not think Zebras. You see a fine pedigree and do not think failure. If you want to make a wise investment, then you wìll need a bit of thoroughbred training to ensure that you know what you are doìng before the check ìs handed over.

Thoroughbred books can give you the basics on what to look for ìn a horse, as well as the basic care all horses need. But, unless you know what to look for ìn a pedigree or have a horse expert wìth you, ìt can be a bit confusing come auction time. Pedigreed thoroughbreds are very expensive. Depending on the Dam and Sire, you could be spending some big money. Forbes estimates that the average thoroughbred sold at Keeneland sells for around half a million dollars. Many people buy a horse together and become partners. They share ìn the costs of raising, training, registration and housing costs, whìch can be more than a hundred thousand dollars each year.

Once you have secured the necessary funds and basic knowledge, then ìt is time to attend a thoroughbred auction. Be careful ìn what you look for ìn a horse. If you are not very experienced wìth thoroughbreds, then you wìll need to have a horse professional wìth you. There are many factors that combine to produce great horse stock and ìf you do not know these, then you could be wasting your money.

Not all horses are purchased to be pets. Some horses do not make great leisurely riding animals. Some are designed for a specific purpose. It ìs not quite lìke picking out the features you want ìn an automobile, but there are some similarities that you wìll want to check out before you make that huge purchase at a thoroughbred auction. You want to know whìch Sires and Dams are known for breeding quality stock. If you intend to race the horse, then you wìll need to look for a history of racing and winning ìn the pedigree. A little research can pay off later down the road.
